Groundhog Day
Happy Groundhog Day!
Groundhog Day 2006 arrived!
Phil saw his shadow!
There will be six more weeks of winter!
Phil started making predictions in 1887 and has become an American institution.
Groundhog Day grew out of a mainly German superstition that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2-- the Christian holiday of Candlemas -- winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will be early.

“Candlemas” is the Christianized name for the holiday, of course. The older Pagan names were the Pagan Festival of Lights or Imbolc and Oimelc. Imbolc means, literally, “in the belly” (of the Mother). For in the womb of Mother Earth, hidden from our mundane sight but sensed by a keener vision, there are stirrings. The seed that was planted in her womb at the solstice is quickening and the new year grows.
Happy Groundhog Day!
