Sean Penn's brother Chris was found dead on Tuesday!
Somber farewell to Penn
By Anthony Breznican,
USA TODAYPARK CITY, Utah — Actor Chris Penn's death cast a pall over Wednesday night's Sundance premiere for The Darwin Awards, in which Penn appeared. Chris Penn, who was found dead Tuesday, acted in such films as Reservoir Dogs and Mulholland Falls. AP file photo
"Obviously we are all sad today about Chris," Darwin Awards writer/director Finn Taylor said at the premiere. "Chris was really excited to be doing a comedy. He was such a great character actor ... and he gave an incredible performance that's going to make a lot of people laugh for years to come."
Penn, 40, was found dead in his condominium Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif. Police said it could be six weeks before the cause of death is determined.
"We are investigating whether it was accidental or natural," says Lt. Fred Corral of the investigative division of the Los Angeles County Coroner's office. "We do not rule out overdose, heart attack, stroke, anything of that nature."
Penn was best known for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs as nice guy Eddie Cabot, the pampered son of a drug kingpin. He was the younger brother of Oscar winner Sean Penn. The brothers appeared together in the movie At Close Range with their mother, Eileen Ryan. Musician Michael Penn is their brother.
In The Darwin Awards, a dark comedy from director/screenwriter Finn Taylor, Penn plays a character who tries to blow a hole in a frozen lake with some dynamite. There are unfortunate results for a friend when the character's dog mistakes the plan for a game of fetch.
Penn was not scheduled to attend the festival, a representative for the movie said.
The premiere of The Darwin Awards, which stars Joseph Fiennes and Winona Ryder as investigators who research off-the-wall deaths, went on as scheduled at the 1,200-seat Eccles Theatre in Park City. A party after the screening, which featured a small-venue performance by the heavy-metal group Metallica, also went on as planned.
