Sublette is someone who's been around the New York music scene since the late 70's, as a musician, author, music label owner, etc.

As a performer, Sublette is probably best known for playing his own, mash-up style of fusing country and western swing with Afro-Caribbean rhythms & styles including salsa, cumbia and rumba, as reflected on the classic album Cowboy Rumba (Palm, 1999), as well as his 2012 second album Kiss You Down South.  I'm surprised nobody else has done this or tried this style of fusion.  I mean the closest thing we have to country and latin music is Tex-Mex, but it's still completely leaning in the country corner with just a little latin spice thrown in the mix.  Ned Sublette however does the reverse mix of Latin music with a little southern comfort mixed in for flavor.  The idea of adding percussion and Afro-Caribbean rhythmic elements to country music seems like a natural progression. Especially in this age of the popularity of the art form known as the mash-up, but it seems to have gone over most people's heads.

For instance take a listen to an entirely different take on "Ghost Riders in the Sky"      He is also a leading scholar of Cuban music.  His label Qbadisc releases Cuban music in the United States and he has released music by Latin musicians including Ritmo Oriental and Issac Delgado and has co-produced Public Radio International's "Afropop Worldwide" show.

For you history buffs, he's also the author of “Cuba and its Music” and “The World that Made New Orleans” and more interesting titles

Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence

Petrol  Records have announced the imminent arrival of a major new feature-length documentary film Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence, which is set to honour the troubled heart and soul of the late Michael Hutchence, the globally acclaimed lead singer of INXS, who died in 1997.  Michael Hutchence was the lead singer of the legendary rock band INXS until his untimely death in 1997. Directed by filmmaker Richard Lowenstein who collaborated extensively with the band throughout their career; directing eighteen INXS videos as well as three for Hutchence solo projects and his acting debut in Dogs In Space,
examines Hutchence’s deeply felt life through his many loves and demons. With Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen & Paula Yates.

A single screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York made headlines around the world. Screen Daily has lauded the film as showing that Hutchence “Belongs in the same company as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant”, and that the film “is a more than worthy tribute.”

"If you’d forgotten that #MichaelHutchence was a goddamn rock star, #Mystify is a potent reminder. Interviews with the #INXS frontman’s bandmates, siblings, managers and ex-girlfriends are layered over photos from his childhood in Australia and footage from the band’s rise to global fame in the late Eighties and early Nineties. The result is an immersive and deeply affecting portrait of a man who was wildly charismatic and sexy onstage, sweet and sensitive once the spotlight was turned off (in an early interview, he cites “not being loved” as his biggest fear). By the time the film reaches Hutchence’s suicide in 1997 at the age of 37, your heart breaks all over again." -- MF https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-lists/25-best-movies-tribeca-film-festival-2019-816637/mystify-816720/

Evan Johns & His H-Bombs

Evan Johns & His H-Bombs

Here's another entertaining offering from Mr.Johns.

Evan Johns (July 12, 1956 – March 11, 2017) was an American guitarist specializing in a variety of music, including rockabilly.  Evan Johns began his musical career in the Washington, D.C. area with Danny Gatton in the late 70's.  After his stint with Gatton, Johns founded his own band, called "the H-Bombs".  In 1984, Johns relocated to Austin, Texas.

Among Evan Johns & His H-Bombs' fans was Jello Biafra, founder of the Dead Kennedys, who in liner notes to an H-Bombs EP, described the H-Bombs' music as "a little Tex-Mex here, garage power there, all whipped into a witch's brew of spitfire guitar and Evan's trademark vocal growl. This is the real stuff."

Evan Johns & His H-Bombs were known for their eclectic repertoire, summarized by one reviewer as "cajun, rockabilly, punk, surf, blues, country – even spaghetti Western soundtrack music."

Another reviewer described his playing as "red-hot rockabilly instrumentals and bruising western swing workouts that sounded like Bob Wills had replaced the Texas Playboys with members of Megadeth."

And for all you foodies, it turns out he's a "Boudin Man" as well.

"Boudin Man"
"Now over in England there's fish 'n' chips
Deep dish pizza is a New York trip
Back up in Maryland they got Brunswick stew
Texas got the chili and the bar-b-que
First thing I do when I enter Louziann
Is buy four or five pounds of that hot Boudin"

Johns died on March 11, 2017, from complications following surgery, in Austin, Texas.

For more on Evan Johns and his music, there's an excellent profile written nearly 22 years ago by Eddie Dean for the Washington City Paper.

Here’s a link to a short video on EJ made during the last years of his life.

CINCO DE MAYO...AKA THE MEXICAN

First off this whole Cinco De Mayo thing..........no it's not about a sink full of mayonnaise......that would be just plain gross.  I think you'd agree.  It's origin is also not about getting drunk on tequila and raiding the taco wagon.  It's also not Mexico's version of our Fourth Of July.  I know the names are kinda similar and all....but yeah......NO!  It's actually all about a victorious battle that Mexico had with the French.  It was basically a real life version of that whole Game Of Thrones 7 Kingdoms battling the White Walkers kind of thing.  You know the EPIC battle I'm talking about.  Maybe you should watch this to get a better idea what you're toasting that tequila too!

CINCO DE MAYO
THE BATTLE

This is what Cinco De Mayo is NOT...
...so now that we've got that out of the way........

The other thing that Cinco De Mayo brings to mind is......well......The Mexican....of course!

"The Mexican" is a piece of music on the album ''First Base'' (1972) by the 1970s British band Babe Ruth. The song is based on the whistling from the music soundtrack by Ennio Morricone for the film For a Few Dollars More. It has been compiled, covered and mixed many times and is considered one of the most influential songs in Hip - Hop music culture. The song was written by Alan Shacklock and recorded along with the rest of the First Base album at Abbey Road Studios in the summer of 1972. Shacklock wrote the lyrics of the song as a retort to the 1960 John Wayne film The Alamo which was full of historical inaccuracies and did not show the human side of the Mexican troops who defeated the Texan forces at the Battle of the Alamo. The song has a driving drum beat and funky bass and shows Shacklock's fondness for African-American music and Wild West shoot outs." -- elias _ftl

And so with out further ado......I give you a Mexican soundtrack for your Cinco De Mayo celebrations!
